Driver's Ed FAQ

Drivers Education F.A.Q. for Students and Families

Upon completion and passing the NJ State Driver Examination, students receive the following information:

Students will receive an examination test receipt, which states that they have passed the NJ State Driver Exam with a score of at least an 80%. Students will need to provide this receipt to their licensed driving instructor when they turn 16 and take 6 hours of behind-the-wheel lessons BEFORE they can drive with their parents/guardians. Students will also have to give the Driving School instructor their 6 points of ID, as described in the NJ Driver Manual (See pages 10-13). The Student Learner's Permit must be validated at a MVC Licensing Center before the student can practice supervised driving. A road test can be scheduled at that time.

Once the Special Learner Permit is processed and validated at a Licensing Center, the student may then practice driving when accompanied in the front seat by an adult supervising driver who is at least 21 years of age and who possesses a valid New Jersey driver license for a minimum of three (3) years. Practice driving is not permitted between the hours of 11:01 PM and 5:00 AM.On the Special Learner Permit, students can drive with their parent/guardian, dependents, plus one additional passenger. When they turn 17, they will take the road test at the MVC, and get their Probationary license. They can then drive unsupervised, or drive with ONE passenger, or, only if a parent/guardian is in the car, they can fill the seats. It is illegal for a young driver on the Special Learner Permit or Probationary License to use any hands-held or hands-free electronic devices.

At ages 18, the student will go to the MVC and obtain my Basic License (see guidelines on pages 15-20). At THAT time, the student can use a hands-free phone when necessary.

PLEASE SECURE YOUR EXAMINATION TEST RECEIPT IN A SAFE PLACE UNTIL YOU TURN 16.

GOOD LUCK DRIVING!!!!

Questions

  1. My child passed the Written Law Knowledge test! What happens now?
    1.  They need to give the ticket (that shows they passed) to a licensed driving instructor when they turn 16 and schedule 6 hours of behind-the-wheel lessons BEFORE they can drive with their parents/guardians. They will also have to provide the instructor 6 points of ID

  1. What are the guidelines for the NJ State Driver Examination?
    1. The web-based knowledge exam is administered in-person only after the required 30 hours of classroom instruction have been administered to the student taking the exam while enrolled at EHS. Web-based knowledge exams are fifty (50) randomized multiple choice questions accessible via a secured URL provided by the MVC. If a student gets 11 questions wrong it will automatically kick them out of the exam. Likewise if a student gets 40 questions correct it will tell them they passed the exam. After each question it will tell them if they got it right or wrong; they can also skip as many questions as they want. There is no score at the end of the exam like it used to be, it is just “Pass” or “Fail”.
    2. Once the student passes the exam, the teacher will print the examination test receipt out and provide it to the student. A copy will also be emailed to the student so if the student loses the receipt, another copy can be printed out.
    3. Students will not be permitted to take the NJ State Driver’s Examination if they are not passing Driver’s Education.

      1. The law knowledge examination may only be read by a NJ MVC licensed Secondary Driving Instructor to any secondary school student, with the student recording responses on the examination.
